As a first-time wig wearer, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. We recently asked our community of wig wearers to reach out, sharing insight into their journey with wigs, in the hope that it may inspire others on a similar path. Today, we learn from Tammy, and what wigs mean to her.
Tammy’s journey with wigs
After being diagnosed with alopecia, Tammy has been wearing wigs for more than 22 years. Today, she has bravely opened up about her journey, and hopes to guide others who may be going through something similar.
Did you have any hesitations about wearing wigs for the first time?
“Absolutely! The word ‘wig’ always put me off, and truthfully, I was very against wearing them, as early wig styles weren’t great. But, as time went on, I grew to learn what was important to me in a wig, such as a monofilament top, a lace front and silicone tabs for comfort. Now I can safely say that I am comfortable within myself, although I am still not a fan of the word ‘wig!’”
As Tammy has said, wigs are all about knowing what works for you, and enhancing your natural features. From face shapes to styling, here are a few easy ways to determine the right wig for you.
How many wigs do you have in your collection?
“I tend to buy one at a time as I like to wear each wig for as long as it allows me to. For me, this is typically between 6-12 months with care and conditioning.”
Wigs need special care to ensure they stay full-bodied. Take a look at our range of wig maintenance products, that help to protect your investment and to ensure your wig stays as good as new.
How often do you replace your wigs?
“If I take care of my wig correctly, I typically replace it every 5-6 months, but this has previously gone up to 12!”
Which is your go-to, human hair or synthetic hair wigs?
“As a single parent, I haven’t yet had the luxury of affording a human hair piece, but hopefully 1 day! Despite that, I love synthetic wigs for their amazing variety and styles to suit every budget. My favourite wig at the moment is the Bluebell wig from the Sentoo Lotus collection.”
What advice would you give to someone who is new to the world of wigs?
“My advice is simply to be patient. I recommend wearing a new wig around the house for a couple of weeks to help you feel comfortable. I find that after that, I start to forget that I am wearing a wig. To help keep it looking natural, I also recommend investing in a dry shampoo. This helps to remove that shiny ‘wig’ look.”
Wearing a wig for the first time can seem daunting, wondering if everyone will be able to tell that it isn’t your natural hair. However, with a few simple steps, you can ensure you feel comfortable and confident wearing a wig from day one. Take a look at our guide to embracing wearing a wig.
