How To : Care for Your Synthetic Wig

Date Mono synthetic wig - Ellen Wille Hairpower Collection

There’s never been a better time to purchase a synthetic wig. Nowadays synthetic wigs are made of such high quality and leading technology, they’re often mistaken for real human hair. They offer a range of benefits to the end user including the ability to hold their style for longer, maintain their vibrant colour, plus they’re usually more cost-effective. Whether you require a wig due to hair loss or for that instant change of style, more and more people are discovering the comfort and versatility of synthetic wigs.

Although known for their lower maintenance requirements in comparison to human hair wigs, they do, however, still require adequate care in order to keep looking their best. This blog will take you through steps to ensure you know exactly how to care for your synthetic wigs to increase their longevity and maintain their fabulous appearance.

How to Care for Your Synthetic Wigs in 5 Simple Steps

At Joseph’s Wigs, our women’s wigs are all designed to withstand many uses; we recommend following the manufacturers’ recommendations that come with your wig to aid this.

Here are general steps you need to take to keep synthetic wigs in top condition.

1. Washing Your Wig with Shampoo

Just like human hair, synthetic hair requires periodic cleaning. Speciality synthetic wig shampoos are made specifically for the fibres in synthetic wigs. These cleaners are designed to gently clean the fibres and remove oil, dust, and styling products. How often wigs need to be cleaned varies depending on how frequently they’re worn and their exposure to polluted air, humidity, sweat, and oil. In general, wigs need to be washed far less often than people wash their hair; if a wig is worn every day, washing it every eight days to every two weeks is typically recommended.

Firstly, ensure you are using shampoo made for synthetic wigs. Add the shampoo (in the recommended quantity) to cold water, then turn your wig inside out and submerge it in the water. Gently swirl your wig in the water and let it soak for around five minutes to allow time for oil and grime to drift away. Once ready, rinse the wig in cold water until the shampoo has been removed. Do not wring or squeeze your wig as this can damage it.

2. Conditioning Your Wig

Proper synthetic wig conditioner is specially formulated to soften, smooth and thoroughly revitalise your wig, and help it to regain suppleness, volume and manageability.

To apply conditioner to your wig, gently spread the conditioner from the “roots” to the ends of the hair shafts. After two minutes, rinse the wig again in cold water until the conditioner has been removed.

3. Wrapping Your Wig for Maximum Protection

Wrap your wig in an absorbent towel and gently pat it dry. Then, spray the wig with fibre oil conditioner. This is a very important step as leave-in conditioner helps to protect the fibres in your synthetic wig while reducing static electricity.

4. Let Your Wig Dry Correctly

Place the wig on a wig stand and let it dry. Do not brush or comb the wig, use your fingers to style the hair into place and leave until it’s completely dry. It’s important to avoid using heated products, like a hair dryer, on synthetic wigs to avoid damage.

5. Comb Your Wig

Once your wig is dry, it’s ready to be combed and styled using a proper wig brush. Some types of synthetic wigs can be styled using heated tools, however, be sure to check your wigs’ manufacturer’s specifications to see which types of styling tools can be used and whether the hair type is heat resistant.
