Whether you have lost your hair as a result of a medical condition, have noticed your hair is thinning with age, or are looking for something to boost your confidence, the first time you shop for a wig can be daunting. Fortunately, you’re not alone, and some of our brave customers have opened up about their experiences with wigs, and how they have shaped the person they are today.
Lesley has shared her journey with wigs with the hope of inspiring others in a similar position.
Lesley’s journey with wigs
Lesley’s journey started 5 years ago, after leaving an abusive marriage of more than 23 years. Here is what she has to say of her story, and what wearing a wig means to her.
“I was in an abusive marriage and as a result, I lost all my hair, along with my confidence and self-belief. For a few years whilst married, I used to wear a hat to try and hide my alopecia but 6 months after my husband left me and our children, my Mum arranged for me to have a wig fitting. She has been an amazing support. That day marks the start of my healing journey. Today, I am a single mother of 3 and at times it can be incredibly tough, but I have never been happier. My wig has given me the confidence to go out in public without worrying, find myself again and simply enjoy life. Thank you for making that possible!”
Did you have any hesitations about wearing wigs for the first time?
Like many first-time wig-wearers, Lesley’s primary concern before buying her first wig was comfort and security.
Wig caps play a huge role in the comfort of your wig, with wefted wig caps known for their breathability whilst lace front cap constructions are popular for their naturality. To find your perfect headpiece, take the time to learn about the different wig cap constructions, to ensure you opt for a wig that works best for your needs. Going forward, you can filter your search by cap construction, so you are only shown the most suitable wigs for you.
Another key consideration when thinking about the security of your wig is putting it on correctly. With the peace of mind that you’ve placed the wig correctly on your head, you should be able to feel comfortable and can wear it with confidence. Our step-by-step guide takes you through how to wear a wig correctly.
How many wigs do you have in your collection?
“I currently have 3 wigs in my collection.”
How often do you replace your wigs?
“I wear a wig daily, and typically replace them every six months.”
How often you need to replace your wig comes down to several factors including the type of hair and how you maintain it.
Synthetic wigs can comfortably last between 4 to 6 months with daily use, and a little longer when worn less regularly. Whereas human hair wigs can often last for over a year when they aren’t chemically processed and are 100% virgin.
However, both hair types will see shorter life expectancies if they aren’t taken care of. To maintain your wigs’ initial volume, bounce and quality ensure you store them correctly and use proper wig maintenance products.

Which is your go-to, human hair or synthetic hair wigs?
“I prefer synthetic wigs as I find them easier to maintain, and these days, they look and feel so natural. My favourite is the Jolie Wig by Noriko in the shade Champagne R.”
Every wig wearer is unique. Some people prefer the versatility that a human hair wig provides, as they can be styled using heat and dyed just as you would your own hair. Whereas many people opt for synthetic fibre wigs because they boast a low-maintenance solution that adds a natural, high-quality touch to your look. If you’re unsure which is right for you, here’s everything you need to know about human hair vs synthetic wigs.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to the world of wigs?
“My advice is to remember that it can take a few different wigs before you find the right one that makes you feel comfortable.”
