Hair loss can be extremely distressing, whether it be temporary or because of a long-term medical condition. Many people turn to wigs as a way of boosting their confidence through hair loss, opting for styles that replicate their natural hair colour, or for some, as an opportunity to test out a new look. In this blog we deep-dive into stress related hair loss and share wigs we would recommend to those going through it.
Stress Induced Hair Loss: What Is It?
Every hair follicle on the human head goes through a cycle of being in either the growth or rest phase, with the majority of follicles in the growth phase (anagen) at any given time. As each follicle gradually transitions into the resting phase, this causes the hair to fall. Whilst this is completely normal, a sudden trigger can cause an abnormal shift into this phase all at once, causing a more substantial amount of hair to fall out. An example of a trigger that could lead to this is significant emotional stress.
Stress on its own can be tough to deal with, let alone paired with sudden hair loss. However, the first step towards a healthier, happier you is to come to terms with the causes of your condition, and the specific type of hair loss you are experiencing. From there, there are ways to regain that sense of self you may have lost during this difficult time.
Types of Hair Loss That Can Be Caused by Stress
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium (TE) is characterised by there being a noticeable rise in the amount of hair shed. Research has suggested that stress reduces the hairs in the hair growth cycle and forces a greater amount to the resting stage, resulting in telogen effluvium hair loss.
Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is the irresistible urge to pull out hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes and other areas of the body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative emotions, such as stress, anxiety or tension.
Alopecia Areata
Another type of hair loss caused by severe stress, alopecia areata is believed to be related to the immune system. As such, it causes a very distinctive type of hair loss, where small patches can appear across the whole body, particularly across the scalp and face.
Whilst all three types of hair loss are typically temporary, wigs are an excellent way of regaining a sense of self during what can often be a very tough period of time.
Choosing the Right Wig for Stress Related Hair Loss
When going through hair loss, the thought of buying your first wig can be daunting. Not only can it be an emotional challenge but there’s also a world of shades, sizes, cuts and caps to choose from – where do you start? Fortunately, we’ve put together a few quick pointers to ensure you are armed with all the knowledge you need to pick out your perfect headpiece.
Different Wig Hair Types
Wigs are typically constructed using 1 of 2 types of hair – synthetic and human hair.
Synthetic fibre wigs are often preferred by people with medical conditions who may prefer a low maintenance style that doesn’t require day-to-day styling, whilst still looking the part. Although wigs of this kind can’t be heat styled (unless specifically stating that they are heat-friendly), they are available in a number of ready-to-wear styles, ensuring there is a look for every occasion.
Human hair wigs boast a natural look for they can be styled and customised to your preference. Whilst more expensive in price, human hair wigs have a lifespan of more than a year even when worn daily and are renowned for their great versatility, comfort, high quality and naturalness which understandably is what, particularly new, wig wearers like to go for.

Wig Cap Constructions
Now let’s take a look at the different wig caps available to people experiencing stress related hair loss.
- Wefted Wig Caps – Capless wigs, known for their breathability and lightweight feel, allowing for extra air circulation and comfort, keeping the head cool. Wig caps of this kind are ideal for occasional wig wearers who are looking for quality and comfort on a budget.
- Monofilament – Monofilament wigs give you the styling flexibility of a natural head of hair. They either use a lightweight soft nylon mesh or a sheer polyester at the crown of the head, so your natural skin tones show through making the hair strands look like your own.
- Hand-tied caps – The most comfortable wig cap available, ideal for those with sensitive scalps, hand-tied caps showcase natural movement and an extremely convincing hair line, whilst known to be one of the most secure cap constructions of them all.
- Lace front – Boasting naturality, lace front wigs allow you to style the wig away from your face without having to worry about the lace being visible. If you’ve lost your front hairline and want the styling versatility, size adjustability and extreme comfort, a lace front wig is right for you.
