How to Store Your Wig When Travelling

ON

Businesswomen who travel with their job, women on holiday and women who use wigs for fashion purposes want to look presentable wherever they are. Stuffing a wig into the bottom of your overnight bag just isn’t doing it any favours.

Wig Travel Guide

Storing Your Synthetic Hair Wigs

If you have a synthetic wig and you don’t travel often, all you need to do is turn it inside out and place it inside a ziplock plastic bag. This will keep the wig safe and stop other items in your bag from messing up the hair or pulling out strands. When you arrive at your destination take it out, give it a shake and a little combing through as necessary and wear as usual.

If your wig is curled or wavy, pin the curls in place before travel to ensure the curls stay in place and don’t become deformed on your journey.

Storing Your Human Hair Wigs

If you have a human hair wig you can also store it inside out in a ziplock bag in your luggage if you are making a short journey or travel infrequently. These provide an easy storage option and can be picked up online in a variety of stores and are built to house a wig stand - even when it is in transit.

Should I store my wigs in hand luggage or checked luggage?

Depending on your baggage allowance, you may decide to travel with your wig in your hand luggage or store it in your checked bag. Whatever you do, avoid cramming your wig into the smallest space possible in your bag. The last thing you want is for your wig to become flattened and for the delicate fibres to get damaged.

If you choose to keep your wig in your hand luggage, this could be the safest option to ensure it gets to your destination as suitcases can also, unfortunately, go missing when travelling.

Will I have to remove my wig when going through airport security?

You will not usually be required to take your wig off when going through airport security. However, if you're wearing metal hair clips or other accessories, these could set sensors off. In this case, you could be subjected to a hand or visual search. If there is a requirement to take your wig off, you may be able to ask for a private room to do this.

Other tips to store wigs when travelling

  • If your next trip with your wigs is to a sunny destination, take care where possible to avoid direct sunlight as sunlight and heat can damage wig fibres, the shape and dull the colour.
  • As you would when at home, avoid wearing your wig when sleeping and store it in the bag or box you're using as storage.
  • Brush through your wig daily to avoid it getting tangled and maintain its condition.
  • If possible, take your wig care products including wig shampoo and conditioner with you to wash your wig as normal. At Joseph’s Wigs, we offer a wide range of wig care products including travel kits so you can maintain your wig’s style whatever the weather. Watch our videos on how to wash synthetic wigs or human hair wigs.
  • If you have a selection of wigs, consider taking a number of options with you. You can mix up your hairstyles each night depending on the weather and how you feel.

Top Tips from Emily

Emily is an inspiring young lady living life with Alopecia. She bravely shares her experiences with alopecia on social media and tips and tricks to live life to the full regardless of circumstances. In the topic of travelling, Emily has been abroad multiple times since being diagnosed with alopecia and has packed her collection of wigs to wear for various holiday occasions.

Here she shares her top 5 tips when travelling with wigs.

Emily Smith with alopecia travelling with wigs

1. Wig stands

“I would bring an Amazon collapsible wig stand just in case you do want to take your wig off at night. If you're going somewhere hot, it is likely to get warm under a wig.”

2. Scalp Wash

“If you can take your wig off at night and give your scalp a good wash at the end of every day, it will feel wonderful and relieve your head from a day with a wig on.”

3. Aftercare

“I recommend giving your wigs the full treatment after coming home. Wash them with sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, and then consider using a deep conditioning mask. Leave it on for an evening and wash it off the next morning. The climate, activities, and sweat can build up, so a thorough wash is essential. If you want to bring your wigs on holiday and plan to wash them, remember to pack your sulphate-free shampoos and heat protection spray if you intend to style them.”

4. Find Outfits to Match Your Wigs

“Match your holiday outfits to your wigs. Have fun with it! Could you bring a couple of wigs with you on your trip?”

5. Relax and Enjoy Your Holiday!

“Try to relax!! You're on holiday, and everyone around you is also on vacation. If you can embrace being bald, I recommend doing so. This way, you won't have to worry about pool chemicals affecting your hair. Just remember to wear a hat or a beach hat to ensure the top of your head doesn't get sunburned.”
