How do you flatten a curly wig?

If you have a curly wig, there’s nothing to stop you from enjoying the benefits of sleek and shiny, straightened hair from time to time. But, if you plan to straighten your curly wig, it’s best to invest in a human hair or heat friendly wig that can be safely styled using heat. Alternatively, if you prefer the low maintenance of a synthetic wig, it may be a good idea to purchase a pre-styled straight hair wig, that doesn’t require heat.

To safely flatten your heat-friendly wig, follow the steps below:

  • Apply a heat protectant to the hair to seal in moisture and fend off frizz.
  • Divide your hair into sections to ensure no strands are missed. Tie each section securely with a hair tie or clip.
  • Gently glide the straighteners through your hair, keeping the temperature as low as you can to avoid additional damage.

Can you use a hair straightener on a wig?

Yes! Hair straighteners can be used on all Joseph’s Wigs heat-friendly and human hair wigs. However, it’s recommended to keep the temperature low and use a heat protectant spray to minimise damage.

How can I make my curly wig look good again?

Human hair curly wigs can become dry when they have been subject to prolonged sun exposure or chlorine, whereas synthetic wigs may lose their shine as a result of brushing, styling and heavy wear.

To bring your curly wig back to life and revive your curls, you’ll need to wash your wig using a synthetic or human hair wig care set. Washing a wig is a little different from washing your natural hair, so make sure you correctly follow this step-by-step process for washing a human hair wig to ensure your wig maintains its high-quality look.

On the whole, we recommend washing your wig every 7-10 wears, whilst using the correct wig maintenance products in between to protect your investment.

What do you spray in a curly wig?

All wigs need special care to ensure they stay looking their best. Curly wigs can get tangled when not maintained correctly, so a detangling mist should be used to reduce breakage when the hair is combed, brushed or styled.

For synthetic wigs, we recommend the synthetic fibre care system from Jon Renau, and for human hair the care system from Jon Renau, complete with shampoo, conditioner, balms and mists.

How do you get bouncy curls in a wig?

Nothing quite beats the look of fresh and bouncy curls. There are several steps you can take to add life back into your curly wig, starting with volumising products. The Tress Tech Wig Wax Spray is your go-to if you’re looking for definition and volume, whilst the Ellen Wille Styling Cream offers reliable hold, keeping your locks in place all day long.

Do you brush curly wigs?

We don’t recommend brushing your curly wig as this could lead to frizz and shedding. However, if you’re looking to detangle your locks, we suggest gently running your fingers through the curls, or using a wide tooth comb.

What can I put on my curly wig to keep it curly?

To keep your wig curly, lightly spritz your hair with a detangling mist, and use a wide tooth comb to brush through the curls. From there, you should use your finger to gently twist each curl, slowly letting it fall back into shape.

Alternatively, human hair and heat-friendly wigs can be styled using a curling iron, but heat should be used cautiously at a low temperature to minimise damage.

How do you get frizz out of a curly wig?

A simple way to defrizz a wig is to wash it, as this restores the bounce and moisture needed to combat frizz. Read our guide on how to wash a synthetic wig and how to wash a human hair wig so that you wash your wig type correctly. Don’t forget to condition your wig to restore the moisture it needs.

If you’re out and about and aren’t able to wash your wig, try running your fingers through the curls, or using a wide tooth comb.

How do you detangle a curly wig at home?

If you’re the proud owner of a curly wig, a wide-toothed comb is your best friend. To remove tangles, gently brush the curls using your comb. Avoid using a hairbrush as this could result in frizzy, damaged locks. We recommend Jon Renau’s wide tooth comb for its excellent ability to detangle and smooth synthetic and heat-defiant synthetic fibre, to support the life expectancy of your wig. A must-have for daily care.
